As Reuters wrote yesterday a Hungarian group of investors is planning to renew an old military airport in Hungary to a commercial airport named Alba Airport. The airport will be located near Székesfehérvár 60km south west of Budapest but the goal is to compete with Budapest Airport Ferihegy in low cost airlines and charter flights.
“Slated to open for international air traffic in the first half of 2010, Alba Airport will cater primarily to low cost, charter and other airlines serving European point-to-point destinations, offering an alternative to Budapest Airport,” the company called Biggeorge’s-NV Zrt said.
But Alba Airport is not only attacking Budapest Airport but also the recently opened Balaton airport as Székesfehérvár is almost in the middle of Budapest (60km) and Lake Balaton (45km). Airlines fyling to Alba airport can carry Balaton and Budapest tourists if the connecting between airport and destination is good.
The projects value is worth more than 150bn Forint (~ $915 million) and plans are to open the airport in first half of 2010. Budapest Airport handeled more than 8.6 million passengers. This number will be attacked if interesting prices and destinations are offered from Alba Airport in Székesfehérvár.
