Update – Announcement of the Winner Dec. 17th 2012, 21:39 I am happy that I could announce the winner of the Budapest Photo Calendar a few minutes ago. The happy person is @kvosburg1 – CONGRATULATIONS – according to Twitter a “dental student, traveler, sweatervest enthusiast” located in Budapest, Hungary (I am a bit sad though that the calendar didn’t go further out in the world). I have contacted her via direct message so lets give her some time to answer. I will than send the calendar plus a little present to her so that she will receive it before New Years! Congrats once again and enjoy the year with your new calendar! Please wait in Tents at the Airport!

Nov 19, 2012 2

I have just read an article in the print version of Budapest Business Journal (the article is not yet available online) about new “waiting facilities” at Budapest Airport for travelers of low cost airlines Wizzair, Ryanair and Easyjet. In order to avoid bus transfer to your aircraft these 3 airlines will make you wait in tents ,without any “hygienic or comfort facilities”, as BBJ calls it, so no toilets, no sinks to wash your hands nor places to change your baby’s diapers, and then you walk to the aircraft. You will just be waiting in a tent like a cow waits to get milked. Bus transportation is fairly normal in Budapest, it seems to be a cost issue not speaking about an air-bridge. Also the low cost airlines used to make you walk to your aircraft (not only in Budapest) in the now closed Terminal 1 but I have never ...

National Geographic awards Tram Line 2 among Top 10 in the World

Oct 31, 2012 0

I have mentioned tram line 2 in Budapest already among my 101 things to do in Budapest (Point 72.) as a great way to see the city with tight budget. Around 300 HUF for the ride among the Danube shore on Pest side and you will see great sights such as the Parliament, Buda Castle, Matthias Church and much more. National Geographic has collected the Top 10 tram rides across the world and place tram Nr. 2 in Budapest on place 7. This once more proves the attractiveness of the city, after having the biggest major European Festival with Sziget and the greatest bar in the world with A38 (Lonely Planet). Again Budapest is in the top lists among great metropolis such as Berlin, San Francisco, Seattle, Hong Kong, Melbourne or Amsterdam. The Tram line Nr. 2 in Budapest rides between Millenniumi Kulturális Központ and Közvágóhíd every day of the ...

Little Done on “Working Saturdays” in Hungary

Oct 31, 2012 0

There is this rule in Hungary that if there is a bridge holiday, connecting a public holiday to the weekend to have 4 days off, instead of working on Fridays you need to work on a Saturday before or after that long weekend. Many people take that day off but also people come to the work place. Since many people took a day off the offices are half empty anyways and you cannot rely on the fact that for example business partners in Hungary and obviously internationally as well work on that Saturday. So usually these Saturdays are not the hardest working days in Hungary. Now I read an article on the Budapest Business Journal underlining exactly that. Well to be honest it did not surprise me. This article is based on a analysis done in 500 Hungarian businesses in various industries by the Bank Quarter Business Centre. According to ...

New Event Center: Budapest Airport Terminal 1

Oct 16, 2012 0

After the closure of Terminal 1 of the Budapest Airport four months ago due to the bankruptcy of Malév the building is now used as an event space with more than 2000 square meters of available space. Additionally to this unique event space there are more than 400 parking places available, it is fully accessible for people with reduced mobility. Basically this space can hold big events such as car shows or it can even be used as a filming location according to the press release of the Budapest Airport. It is an inexpensive alternative for shooting a airport scene as no other European airport is empty and serves as a film space. The building designed by Károly Dávid junior opened up in 1950 and was fully renovated in 2005 so it is actually brand new and modern. Andrea Trencsén, head of aviation marketing and product development of the Budapest ...

Amusement Park to close permanently as of November 6th 2012

Sep 28, 2012 0

Sad news for all kids today, the Amusement Park (Vidámpark) in Budapest will close its gates permanently as of November 6th 2012 as I just read on Caboodle. The park is close to bankruptcy and the renovation would cost around 1bn HUF. City leaders are pro amusement park in Budapest but would prefer an entirely new park together with a private investor. The closure will only be beneficial for the Zoo in Budapest which will expand into the area of the park and will also keep historical rides such as the 1922 built roller coaster in function. So as of next year you will have to possibility to have a ride during your Zoo visit. In case you would like to visit the park once more you need to hurry up, it’s only a bit more than a month left until permanent closure. For many Budapesters this will be a ...
