New Car Sales in Hungary dropped 60%

Aug 3, 2012 0

A survey from June conducted by PwC has resulted in a 60% drop in car sales in 2011 compared to 2008. This year the expected new car sales number is 46.000 units which is no big change compared to the 2011 actual sales of 45.000 units. Main reason for this drop is of course the economical situation as well as the new car tax and car dealers are not expecting any improvement before 2014. These numbers go well with the 12 years average age of cars in Hungary which I have written about a few days ago. With the current new car registration rate it would take Hungary 60 years to replace all passenger cars. The bad situation obviously forces people working in the car industry to cut jobs (64% plan to do so) or marketing investments (69% plan to do so). Another interesting number is that 9% of the ...

31% of Hungarians are “very pessimistic” about their Retirement

Aug 1, 2012 0

A survey conducted on behalf of Aegon in nine countries has resulted in the finding that Hungarians have only plans for savings but no actual savings. Hungarians are worrying about their retirement fundings. A whooping 55% have serious doubts about their future pension benefits and 31% are very pessimistic about their retirement. “Only” 57% of Hungarians are aware that they need self responsibility to secure their retirement which in reverse means that almost half of the population is not even aware of that and will maybe run into trouble when being retired. Two other interesting numbers out of that report are that 83% of Hungarians believe that the value of the state pension will lose value while 78% believe that the retirement age will even increase. Scary numbers if you ask me and I must admit that I am among those who believe that the pension will lose value. What ...

Hungarian Mothers – Longest paid maternity leave in CEE

Jul 31, 2012 2

According to a survey by Accace Hungarian mothers have the longest paid maternity leave in CEE. The region CEE in this study includes next to Hungary the Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and the Ukraine. The longest a mother can go to maternity leave in Hungary is 3 years out of which for 168 days she is paid with 70% of her original salary which is paid by the state. After this period a mother is entitled approximately 100€ per month for the child. But the payment is not what I am looking at here, it is rather the time a mother can stay with the child after birth. The study points out that  Ukrainian mothers are in the worst position being allowed only 56 days to stay home after birth. It is a bit more complex than that, it depends on more factors such as how many children the ...

Average Age of Hungarian Cars is 12 Years

Jul 31, 2012 0

Did you know that the average age of Hungarian cars is 12 years? According to a study conducted by Medián in 2008 nearly one-third of the cars in Hungary have been 5 years or younger. This number has changed dramatically across all age and social groups so that today less than 10% are 5 years old and younger. The average age went down to 12 years in average. This of course has to do with several crisis and a change in mindset but this also brings a positive side, used cars are cheap as never before and that also attracts foreign car dealers buying used cars in Hungary. However I think that 12 years is a fairly scary age for a car where a lot has to be invested into maintenance and also security standards have not been as high as they have been in 2000. But as long as ...

Kürtoskalács makes it to New York

Jul 31, 2012 0

You might know Kürtoskalács from a festival in Budapest or from the Christmas market, the popular chimney cake originated in Transilvania which is topped with different flavors such as nuts, sugar or cinnamon. Kürtoskalács is very popular among young and old for different occasions and in some families it is even home made in the garden above the open fire. Now this Kürtoskalács made its way over the Atlantic Ocean straight to New York as The Hungarian Girl reports in a recent post. I have heard of many things being carried over to the US from Europe but I would have never thought that Kürtoskalács makes its way anywhere across the borders. Now it is available in the Chimney Cake Bakery in Long Island New York. Open daily till 6pm you can have your Kürtoskalács dose as Hungarian abroad or as New Yorker and try something new. I definitely recommend ...

Hungarian Wine – Regions, Culture & Bars

Jul 19, 2012 1

Hungarians are very proud of their wines and that is for a good reason, the quality of the wine from Hungary is superb. Most famous among the Hungarian wines is the sweet dessert wine from Tokaj in North-Eastern Hungary which is comparable to the Port Wine in terms of publicity, just it is a white wine. The reason for the missing popularity abroad, though it is rising, is the simple fact that a small country like Hungary cannot produce as much wine as larger countries such as Italy or France. So it is a quantity matter, not quality, that Hungarian wine is not sold around the globe though it has the requirements to do so. Most of the wine produced in Hungary is consumed in Hungary as well but some bottles or barrels make it across the border. There are several wine regions in Hungary which you will read about ...
