Coffee Cat in Budapest

Coffee Cat is a small, cosy and friendly café in the centre of Budapest offering a superb selection and quality of coffee. If you want to get away from Starbucks and Costa Cafe quick drinks for a lot of money I can only recommend you to visit Coffee Cat because the coffee is really excellent, if not the best I had in Budapest. Located in a quiet area of Ó utca which is known for bars and pubs Coffee Cat is a very small but super friendly and cosy place to have your coffee in the morning or afternoon.

Above the counter you can finda visualized selection of all the coffee types available ranging from a normal Espresso, the traditional cappuccino to Mexican Coffee and Iced Latte Macchiato so whatever you prefer you will find it in Coffee Cat. The coffee is according to the website 100% Columbian Arabica which reflects in the taste so you really have quality coffee in your hand. The prices in Coffee Cat Budapest are avarage, maybe a bit above but for the quality I am willing to pay some Forint more, so for an Espresso you pay 310 HUF, for a large Cafe Latte you get charged 510 HUF which still is probably 25% cheaper than in some trendy café. Also very popular in Coffee Cat are the croissants.

Though I was invited on a coffee by the owner I chose to give it a try without free coffee to check the staff as well and I, as well as the persons in front of me, were treated really friendly and helpful. The coffee is really made with love which takes its time but I guess that for a good coffee everybody is willing to wait. The interior in Coffee Cat is simple but absolutely sufficient and comfortable. Also as I can see the staff is treating its regular guests in a special way even dedicating them a picture and small description on their website naming it the “Cat Family”.

So if you enjoy a good coffee at any time during Coffee Cats opening hours, weekdays 7.30 – 16.00 and Saturday 9.00 – 11.30, I strongly recommend you to have a look and try out one of their coffees because they are really fantastic and maybe you will get your section in the Cat Family soon as well.

Good bread is something I was missing in Budapest, until now. Villa Bagatelle in Budapest is a bakery, café and home decoration shop in one place. It settled in a big, beautiful villa in the 12th district in Budapest, that why it took the name of Villa Bagatelle. The building is from 1929 when an owner of a pharmacy built a villa in Németvölgyi út for him and his family. Over the years the house has changed owners sometimes and now it became a family business including a superb bakery, the coffee place and a home decoration shop in the top floor. Beautifully renovated and with a very nice garden around Villa Bagatelle invites guests to have a coffee on the balcony or in the wonderful decorated inside. Also the place is very children friendly, equipped with many children seats and a nice corner to play for children of all ages.

The Bakery

In the bakery called “Brót” after the German word for bread I guess you can find many different tzpes of very good baked breads, rolls and cakes but also you get soups, croissants and of course Hungarian traditional Pogácsa, so basically everything you expect from a decent bakery. The thing is for me as a German I cannot really get friends with Hungarian white bread and also the trial to make brown breads so for me Villa Bagatelle is a little heaven in the center of Budapest. Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing better than Hungarian white bread next to a good Gulash Soup but for breakfast I prefer the German type of bread and rolls.

The Café

In the first floor you can find the Café of Villa Bagatelle which offers place to probably 50 people and also in summer time you can enjoy their balcony to have your coffee or breakfast. I have been there on a sunday morning and the café was entirely full with people having breakfast, enjoying the sun on the balony or simply have a chat with friends. You can get many things there for breakfast but of course it is recommendable to have some bread from the own bakery.

The Home Decoration Shop

Unfortunately the Home decoration was closed on the day I was there but I could have a sneak through the glass door (see image below) and check what they offer there. Of what I could see the offered things were nothing spectacular but nice indeed and it seems to go hand in hand with the other two parts of the villa where really every little detail is well worked out and wonderful decorated. When I am there next time I will have a closer look on the Home Decoration Shop.

Price wise Villa Bagatelle is for sure not the cheapest place but the quality justifies the prices. Also keep in mind that it is located in the 12th district which is a bit more expensive than other districts in Budapest so I didn’t expect something else. As mentioned the quality of the products and also the taste is really great so I will not complain about the price but if you expect a 150 HUF / kg of bread price you will be in the wrong place.

I really enjoyed the short time I have been to Villa Bagatelle and will return for sure to have a proper breakfast in the sun. So I definitely recommend to have a look, grab a good bread and a fresh orange juice or coffe.

California Coffee Company is one of these Cafés just like Starbucks or Cafe Costa and since a while there are three stores in the center of Budapest, one outside and another one in Kecskemét. Yeah, another one. I do like coffee and the coffee in California Coffee company does taste great if you take one of the normal coffees. Too fancy are the white chocolate macchiato, caramel iced latte and what so ever. The California Coffee Company has opened up stores on Teréz Körút, Kálvin Tér and Szent István Tér as well as in the Premier Outlet Center close to Budapest. They offer free Wifi, next to the coffee they serve different sandwiches, cakes and some more stuff to eat as well as tea but also cold drinks of course.

It is good to see a certain amount of new style Cafés coming to Budapest giving a difference to the old fashiones traditional Vienna type of Cafés. These old Cafés offering overpriced coffee in a grandmothers atmosphere with cake on a sunday afternoon for elder people. Not that these new fashion coffee stores are cheaper but they bring a bit of variety in the city and the lifestyle of Budapest people and so does the California Coffee Company. If you are on your way through the city and want to grab a fast coffee these places are perfect and fast. So have a look into California Coffee Company in Budapest.

No, Starbucks is not yet in Budapest but the California Coffee Company and now finally the Enlish version Costa Coffee opened up in the heart of Budapest. Located right on the corner of Andrássy út and Bajcsy-Zsilinszky út which is probably one of the most promenent places in the city.

Costa Coffee definetly makes fantastic coffee but the prices are fairly expensive, especially compared to normal Hungarian coffee prices. You can find fancy creations of the list like Mochachino or Caramel Machiato which taste quite OK but have nothing to do anymore with coffee. Anyways, you pay for a medium Cafe Latte around 650 HUF which normally would be probably around 350 Ft.

Nevertheless Costa Coffee brings some Coffee to go flair to Budapest and offers a nice ambience, wireless and next to all kinds of coffee creations some sandwiches and cakes. So if you fany aLondon type of coffee in the heart of Budapest than have a stop at Costa Coffee.

Style and flair

The bar Minyon in Budapest is located in one of the upcoming areas of Budapest downtown, Király utca. In Király utca more and more bars, cafes and restaurants open up which all are styled well, serve good food and offer great cocktails. Bar Minyon is one of those. The interior reminds me of some lounge style straight from New York or London, modern a bit sterile but comfortable on every place.
The interesting thing about Bar Minyon is that on fridays and saturdays at 11 o’clock the bar turns into a club with dance floor, lound live music and a bar as long as the place itself. I haven’t been there for the club time but I heart that it is good.

During the day Bar Minyon is more or less a cafe with small snacks, fresh coffee and cakes. In the afternoon and evening in Bar Minyon well prepared food is served. The food is a bit overpriced but a classical fusion food which tastes great. You need to be a bit careful with the “Mangalica wrapped in Parma Ham” as the portion is really really small. I ate a duck curry with pasta which was really great. So I can recommend the food even though it is nothing extraordinary.
Next to the food Bar Minyon serves tons of different cocktails and a large selection of wines. All drinks, as well as the food, are a bit overpriced but still in a affordable range. If you feel like eating out in a new and stylish restaurant in Budapest Minyon might be the best choice for you.

Adress:

Cafe Farger in Budapest is a cosy little cafe near Szabadság tér which is close to the parliament and the US embassy, around the corner of Iguana. The style of Farger Cafe is a bit hard to explain, it reminds me of an American coffee house with fancy creations, different cakes and free internet, so quiet close to some Starbucks cafe.

Also you get tons of newspapers and magazines there and of course a friendly staff which serves abolutely great coffee. For all of you who want to enjoy a lazy afternoon in a coffee, meet people or just surf in the net I highly recommend Farger Cafe in Budapest.

And yes, you have heard right because the first Starbucks in Hungary has opened up in West End City Center in Budapest. On the official Starbucks website you can’t find any information that Starbucks is open but I got a tipp on Facebook, doublechecked and there you go… “Itt hamarosan STARBUCKS” OPEN. I have received loads of mails when there will be finally a Starbucks because there is Costa Coffee, California Coffee Company and so on but no Starbucks. I never could give an answer because there was simply no information about it. But what is a better proof than having the storefront ready and mentioning “coming soon” on the door open for the public. So if you fancy Starbucks coffee have a go and get your coffee.

Cafe Gerloczy in Budapest is a nice, small cafe hidden near Déak tér. Located at Gerlóczy u. 1., a small street between Déak tér and Astoria, Cafe Gerloczy offers good coffee as well as excellent Crepes. The breakfast menu is massive and you are able to choose single bits and pieces and put them together to a decend breakfast.

The prices are average and the service is very well English speaking and very friendly. For a relaxed saturday or sunday morning with a good breakfast Cafe Gerloczy is the right place to go.

The Dunapark Café in Budapest is located on the Pest side next to a little park near the Danube. It’s a quiet poshy place and if you want to see a Maserati or some expensive car like that, this is your place.

I don’t know if it was bad luck which I had but when I arrived in Dunapark Café and opened my laptop the internet was not working there. Additionally they didn’t have Lager beer anymore and the salad I ate was nothing but some lettuce with a chicken breast which was supposed to be a “Saté Chicken”. In total the Dunapark café in Budapest was a rip off, expensive, low quality even though the place has some flair with comfortable corners to sit in, Poker tables and much more. Nevertheless I would recommend to go to some other café, bar, restaurant in Budapest.
