Enjoy mulled wine and kürtös kalács
Location: Various Locations in Budapest
FREEEvery year when Christmas time starts, and that is actually already end of November, on big and frequented squares such as the famous Vörösmaty Square Christmas markets in Budapest are opening up. Different exhibitors rent one of the booths to show their products which are mostly hand crafted little gifts but also mass produced cups, scarfs or other stuff you actually get all year long but usually buy it on a Christmas fair. But the main reason for most people to go to one of the Budapest Christmas Markets is the mulled wine and some food together with friends and family. The food is the typical festival or fair food such as sausages, deep friend meat, kind of stews paired up with chips/french fries and the typical Hungarian Savanyúság which are pickled cucumbers, cabbage, onions, paprika and almost everything else you can pickle. There are several Christmas markets in Budapest, some of them are nice some of them are just a waste of space but as long as you have enough mulled wine and good company all of them are fun. If you need a recommendation than I can only urge you to go to the Christmas market on Vörösmaty Tér in the city center of Budapest.
Christmas market Vörösmaty térThe Vörösmaty tér is in the center of Budapest, in the middle of the touristic area on the end of Vaci utca. Usually you don't see many Hungarians in Vaci utca as it is mainly made for tourists but in the Christmas time Vörösmaty tér hosts the nicest and I think biggest Christmas market in Budapest. Next to the typical hot wine and sausages you find nice little shops with all kind of Christmas related things. I will be there.
Jokai tér christmas marketA small but nice christmas market on the opposite site of Liszt Ferenc tér. This Christmas market closes quiet early and the single places for hot wine or food are not as nice as for example on Vörösmaty tér. Nevertheless if you are around there have a look or go to the opposite site on the Liszt Ferenc tér Christmas market.
Liszt Ferenc tér christmas marketUsually on Liszt Ferenc tér you find outside a lot of chairs and tables from the restaurants and bars but in the winter time it is obviously too cold to sit outside. So the place is used for the Christmas market. I have never been really there, just walked across but it looked to me like a sales point for touristic stuff like typical Hungarian blankets and so on.
Christmas Market on Fashion StreetFashion street is a fairly young place to go to in Budapest, it is basically an artificially setup street behind Hotel Kempinsiki where many high end fashion labels opened up flagship stores such as Boss, Tommy Hilfiger, Sisley but also other consumer brands such as Vodafone, Vapiano and Coffee Heaven. I wouldn't consider this aggregation of Christmas stands as an entire Christmas Market but at least it gives some flair to Fashion Street though the Christmas fair offers have nothing to do with fashion or high class products, it is the same as elsewhere. But if you happen to be there, have a look and a wine.
