The House of Terror is a museum containing exhibits related to the communist and fascist dictatorial regimes in the 20th century Hungary and is designed to commemorate this bloody part of Hungarian history. It is located at Andrássy út 60 in Budapest Hungary and it is one of the most popular sites on the famous Andrássy Boulevard. It is a member organization of the Platform of European Memory and Conscience and it serves as a memorial to the victims of the dictatorial regimes which ruled Hungary for many years.
The building where the museum stands today was purchased in December of 2000 by the Public Foundation for the Research of Central and East European History and Society and the House of Terror museum was opened on February 24th 2002. The design of the museum was a collaboration between architects Attila F. Kovács (who designed the final look of the museums exhibition hall and the external facade), János Sándor and Kálmán Újszászy who designed the reconstruction of the exterior of the building. The reconstruction of the exterior of the building gave the museum a truly unique look which helps it stand out amongst the many sites on Andrássy út.
The museum contains a permanent exhibition which is dedicated to exposing what many Hungarians went through under Soviet occupation as well as due to the nation’s relationships to Nazi Germany. It is designed as a monument to the memory of those held captive, tortured and killed in this building. Furthermore, the permanent exhibition also contains material related to Hungarian organizations sympathetic to communism and fascism such as the communist AVH and the fascist Arrow Cross Party. The exhibits are all in Hungarian although each room also contains information sheets in English as well as audio guides in English and German. The House of terror is open every day from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm except for Mondays.
