What is it like to work in Hungary?

The following is based on my experience so if you do not agree feel free to leave a comment or drop me an email. I am always interested in the experience other people have made. To start working in Hungary, and here Budapest is not an exception though very international, without Hungarian language knowledge you will need a lot of endurance and power to push through that you are a foreigner and that people around you should speak a language that everybody understands. Here usually come the first complaints “why should I speak in a foreign language in my own country?” that I was facing. Absolutely understandable if you are not working in an international environment. However these experiences you can make in multinational companies as well, they are no exception. Now it shouldn’t be your colleagues who need to change but it is you. Therefore I urge you to start learning Hungarian. It is not about speaking perfect business fluent Hungarian and understanding every single word that is spoken around you it is rather showing that you make the effort to understand you colleagues and customers. Learning Hungarian will get you a lot of credits. Still you will be facing a lot of Hungarian language around you that you are not capable to understand especially when it comes to meetings and discussions where more than one people speaks, maybe even fast and loud. My tip, find a helpful contact person around you. Even if you didn’t understand anything in that particular situation he or she will be able to help you afterwards. A contact person is also very good for any administrative stuff that you will face starting from your apartment contract to your insurance card.

BEST CHOICE: BudapestJobs.net BudapestJobs.net is a new job site dedicated for jobs in Budapest. You can find here jobs in all types of jobs, for foreigners as well as for locals, student jobs, full time jobs and much more. With the English interface and the fantastic system behind it is very easy to find the right job for you. Additionally BudapestJobs.net gives you good information about companies in Budapest, how to write your CV and how to apply for a job in Budapest. Have a look.
More job websites focusing on Jobs in Budapest and Hungary:

  • Monster.hu Monster.hu has good and interesting jobs online which sometimes have an English description. The problem is that the engine itself is not available in English. However with a bit of searching and trying you will find the job listings you are looking for. Hungarian / English job posting ratio probably 90 / 10
  • Profession.hu Profession.hu is a good database for tech jobs but also other openings. Many well known companies search here for people and the selection is probably one of the best in Hungary. Always worth a visit if you are looking for jobs in Budapest and Hungary.
  • Linkedin Linkedin as the largest social job network in the world is part of every company’s recruiting strategy and one of the first pages to visit for recruiters to find talents. Though with ~140€ per job posting very expensive Hungarian companies have discovered Linkedin for their recruitment efforts. It is worth a look to find the right job for you.
  • CVonline.hu New for me but really interesting is CVonline.hu which is in English (also Hungarian), clear structured and good job offers. With more than 5200 jobs the database is not massive but large enough.

I think these are the top 5 job sites for jobs in Budapest respectively Hungary. So if you are searching for a job in Hungary check out these 5 sites. Of course there are many other job sites online especially if you are looking for specialized jobs such as engineering, education or consulting jobs. These sites also help if you are looking for a student job in Budapest.

Recruitment Agencies in Budapest

While searching for a job you might want to send your CV to one of the recruitment agencies located in Budapest who constantly browse their CV database to match the best applicants on the market with the open positions they have. Greetings All,

I have tried everyone of those sites and I unfortunately had no luck. I am curious to know my chances of finding any job that would take on someone that knows English only. I do not know any European languages and I currently reside in USA.

I am trying to relocate to Budapest to be with my fiance. So any helpful hints or a point in the right direction would be most appreciated.

    Hi,

There are many many vacancies for English speaking staff. The issue is that most people who come from the UK/USA/IRE are used to earning 4 times as much money and want paying the same/similar amount when in this region.

There are many call centre/customer service jobs out there for people with conversational level of English. We are always recruiting, and haven’t stopped for two years. Some people stay, some people go.

In our experience too many recruits are completely unrealistic in their expectations. Western European companies relocate headcount to Budapest to reduce costs, not to fund working holidays.

When a candidate sits in front of me and wants £3k/mth, laptop, company car, and we haven’t even started talking about what they will contribute to the company – we know its a bad match.

We recruit for a range of jobs paying between 130k and 500k/mth… if you just have English as your main skill, you can join us by all means on the lower tiers… solid sales history, account management and web development, then your higher up the tier…

If you would like an interview with Potion Media, or fancy a chat about recruitment in general – by all means email me at potion@potionuk.com

My name is Jose Luis and I am a Building Engineer who has been working in both fields for the past 7 years. Throughout my career I have worked both in the private and public sectors alike. Currently I am working for an Architecture Studio in Spain and my responsibilities include the design, material implementation, certifying, management and execution of architecture/ engineering/environmental projects and urbanism.

I have participated in Erasmus for young entrepreneurs in Budapest, so I would like to improve my knowledge and international experience here . So now I am looking for a job in order to gain professional experience to better compete in a global economy. I am fluent in English and Spanish as mother language

    thanks

If I moved to Hungary I would immediately begin using my mechanical skills to serve the business sector and general public in both fleet service maintenance and repair service. This is a skilled labor position that yields real benefit to myself and others. As here in Canada, I can create my own business instead of look for a job to be given, I could simply create one.
