Excellent little restaurant for a romantic dinner!
M Restaurant in Budapest is a small but very stylish eatery near Oktogon in downtown with a small but wisely chosen menu of excellent food. Passing by the location M restaurant would not really catch your eye and even if you would recognize it from outside it rather looks like a little, cheap bar with a few tables and chairs. There are more tables upstairs which you cannot really see from outside so in total M can hold something like 30 people and it would be packed. This all sounds not too interesting but once you check the menu which you can have a look into outside your mouth will be watering and you might take the step inside. The restaurant itself reminds me a lot of the very famous Ruin Bars in Budapest with simplistic decoration, paper table covers with a stamp on which you can paint on and little interior highlights here and there. Nevertheless M Restaurant in Budapest is a very comfortable and stylish place to have your lunch or dinner at and the more you take a look around you find more and more goodies that make it a fantastic and interesting place to eat at.
The menu is changing daily, or at least the menu list is printed daily with the current date on it, and holds few but delicious dishes from around the globe. The selection is valid for the time I have been there so in case you chose to go there it might be outdated already but I can imagine that some of the dishes are constantly on the item list. As a starter there are fancy soups such as a curry fish soup or a pumpkin beetroot soup but also there are salads available with beef stripes or tuna tartar. Served along the starters is fresh, homemade bread which is still warm and fresh from the oven. As main courses there is a wide choice of meat dishes but also fish and the “daily veggie” which is according to the waiter is a little surprise, you just say what you do not like and get a vegetarian dish spiced in the daily way. Also you can have a dessert such as the classical Palacsinta (Hungarian pancake) or chocolate cake.
It seems that M Restaurant is especially famous among students for its “Good value for the money” credo and as it sounded like on the neighboring tables many of them are foreigners but also Hungarians find their way into M. Maybe M is a hot tip among Erasmus students and other foreign students.
Checking some reviews on the web to support my positive opinion about I just saw that on Google M received 24 out 30 possible points in 13 reviews which is “very good to excellent” and also other voices on the web like M and give it positive reviews. As a summary I would say there is no reason not to pop into M for a good lunch or dinner once to try it.
