Good Hungarian restaurant in 4 locations!
Restaurant VakVarjú is located in the city center of Budapest, near Déak Square and Andrássy Út. Actually the VakVarjú is a group of place with one restaurant on Buda side, another one on Pest side and a third restaurant on Kopaszi Gát (VakVarjú Beach). The fourth location is a “kocsma” so a small pub actually called VakEgér with beer and snacks. That about the locations and restaurants but lets have a look inside.
The restaurant VakVarjú in Budapest is a very nice decorated place with excellent food. In every corner of the restaurant you can find some funny or interesting decoration like for example a boxsack in the toilet, some Vespas in front of the bar to sit on or many other little bits and pieces. The place in Paulay Ede utca is fairly large so that large groups also fit in there without having trouble with other guests, however I think you should make a reservation because on that Wednesday I have been there the place was full till the last seat.
The food of VakVarjú is a good International Hungarian combination so you can get a taste of Goulash Soup but also you have the chance to eat a good steak. One of the specialities in VakVarjú is Kenyér Lángos which is sometimes named Hungarian Pizza but has not much in common with pizza as you know it but is rather a thick piece of bread topped with different things but not necessarily tomatoe sauce and cheese.
What is the food like at VakVarjú Budapest?
I had as a starter Buffalo Mozzarella swimming in Tejföl (very popular Hungarian Sour Cream) and a rocket salad aside. My main course was a steak with Layered potatoes which was quite OK but not outstanding. The potatoes were very dry, the ones at Chez Daniel are far better, and the steak was nice but if you want to eat steak you are better served in Jardinette. However, nothing to complain about the food at all. My dessert was a “cheese cake” which is, for the ones familiar with the differences, a turó cake. Very good but really heavy after all that dinner before.
All people I have been with to VakVarjú were satisfied with their food and had nothing to complain about so I can reccomend this restaurant from food perspective.
One little critic stayed though. The service was not the good. The waiters were slow and a bit unfriendly which might be the result of a full restaurant but that needs to be resolved professional if so many places are offered there needs to be a friendly waiter serving each and every guest.
Overall restuarant VakVarjú was a great experience and even though in the middle of Budapest one might think that they try to get some Euros off the tourists but they actually don’t. The prices are a bit higher than average but absolutely justified for the quality of food. I do recommend you to go there if you are in the city center, it is one of the best restaurants you can find around.
