Kopaszi Gát in Budapest is a very nice recreation area on Buda side richt at Lágymányosi híd. The half island was built up after the flood in 1838 as a protection against flood for the near by industrial buildings and factories. Already some years ago there were some clubs and bars located which than moved on to other places. For some years this half island was unused even though it was a really nice spot in Budapest. Right next to the Danube, fairly calm and with a little bay between the island and the industrial area this was a perfect place to be rebuilt and give it some attractions.

So it came that a private developing cooperation from Portugal decided in 2003 to redevelop the 15 hectare half island to make it a inner city relocation area and they did a fantastic job. The park on Kopaszi Gát is wonderful to take a walk, you have a beach to lay on, a track to go for running, restaurants and bars, green areas to lay on and so much more. It is really worth to spend here a sunny sunday afternoon, eat some good dinner and have a chilled beer in the sun.

“Fűre lépni szabad!” that is what you find on every green part of the island and means “Allowed to step on the grass” which is a little provocation to other parks and recreation areas in Budapest where it says “Fűre lépni tilos” so that it is forbidden. That makes Kopaszi Gát in Budapest a really sympatic place to be. Also wonderful is that people who go there really care about enviroment by not throwing their trash in the grass or in the bushes but in the litter bins which is rare in Budapest. So in total you can say that Kopaszi Gát in Budapest is a really friendly place also for families with children. Only thing not allowed on Kopaszi Gát are dogs and that for sure has the reason to keep the gras clean because Hungarians tend to not clean after their dog.

Anyways if you search for a place to walk, run, relax, eat or drink I can highly recommend Kopaszi Gát. To give you an impression on how it looks like have a look at the pictures.

The Grand Market Hall in Budapest (Hungarian: Vásárcsarnok) is one of the main attraction for tourists. If you go to a foreign country I think markets are a great way to discovers the culture and food preferences of the country. If I am on holiday usually half a day is reserved to go to a market and check out what is offered there.

It is probably the same in the Grand Market Hall in Budapest because you find typical Hungarian things such as paprika powder, goose liver or Pálinka. At least that is what the tourists should think about Hungary and their eating habits and I guess that is similar in any other touristic market in the world, they try to make you believe what is traditional. But of course Hungary is not only about paprika, Goulash and Salami even though that is what you mainly find in Grand Market Hall.

Anyways this is not about the tradition of Hungarian cooking and drinking rather a subjectiv opinion about the Grand Market Hall which is located at Fövám Tér right at the end of thenumber 1 touristic street in Budapest Váci utca. So there are mainly three types of shops in the Grand Market Hall which are vegetables (yes you will find a lot of paprika there), meat (yes, Salami) and souvenirs (ever heart about beautiful Hungarian table covers?). But to protect the Hungarian variety you just have to go to the cellar and you will find fish shops, an Asian shop with a shit load of spices, herbs, vegetables and all that kind of stuff. Additionally doenstairs you will find “Savanyúság” which is pickled vegetables such as cucumbers, cabbage, paprika, peppers and even baby melons.

If you go upstairs in the Grand Market Hall you have mainly bad quality textils such as T-Shirts with the parliament on it saying “I love Budapest” or the above mentioned table covered which maybe my grandmother would buy. But you also have restaurants and fast food places where you can get (bad quality) Hungarian food such as “Hurka” (sausage), Goulash Soup, “Székelykáposzta” (cabbage meat stew) and of course “Lángos”, “Palacsinta” and beer.

The Citadella stands on Gellert Hill on the Buda side and was placed for the soldiers who died in world war 2. The statue is seen almost from every part of the city. In her hands she holds a palm leaf. Originally she was holding a propeller which was dedicated to the son of Miklós Horthy who died in a test flight when world war 2 stated. The propeller got replaced because Miklós Horthy had good contacts to Hitler and they did not want to remind of him. At August 20th (the national holiday) the fireworks is started at the Citadella.

The thermal water in Budapest is not only responsible for Budapests famous baths but also the famous caves in Budapest. The water formed the more than 200 documented caves in Budapest. Four of the biggest and most impressive caves are visitable for tourists and interested persons.
The Budapest caves are often not integrated in a Budapest tours therefore it is necessary to organize the visit yourself. To calculate with half a day for a cave visit is realistic but of course it does not have to take so long.

The caves in Budapest are a big sightseeing attraction and very popular. It is also very interesting to see these natural caves. If you have time to visit one of the below caves I recommend it, for a weekend trip it might be to time consuming.
