Budapest Sziget Festival

Budapest Sziget Festival

The Sziget festival is the biggest Rock festival in Europe concerning the number of visitors. The reason for that is that the Sziget festival lasts a complete week and not like many other Budapest festivals just a long weekend. The speciality about the Sziget festival is that it is on an island (Sziget = Island) and even though in between Buda and Pest you feel like being in another world, somewhere in the wood far away from the city center. The island is usually called Óbudai Sziget even though the official name is Hajógyári Sziget. Óbudai island is the biggest island in Budapest measuring more than 70 football pitches and is in the northern part of Budapest. The Sziget Festival exists since 1993 and started as the “student festival” and was organised by a few music fans, what came out of it is what we have today… a fully comercialised festival with more than 1000 performances and several hundredthousnad visitors.

Sziget Festival 2012 Tickets

To purchase tickets for the Sziget Festival in Budapest you either preorder or you buy the evening you go there. For people from abroad I suggest to buy some in case there are no tickets left, which to be honest has never happened to me since I go to Sziget Festival. If you are from Budapest you can buy a ticket for the festival at one of the official ticket places, e.g. on Nyugati, or you buy the ticket on the evening you go there.

You can also buy your tickets online directly from the organiser or at big European ticket vendors such as Eventim. For more information about tickets please follow this link.

Sziget Festival Hotel

In case you are not a camping type of person and you are not from Budapest you might want to sleep in a hotel near Hajógyári Sziget (Óbuda Island) where the Sziget Festival is taking place every year. Festival visitors who stay for the entire week usually take the opportunity to stay on the camping ground which is straight next to the stages and tents, for one or the other this is not an appropriate accommodation especially when it comes to toilets and washing rooms which are a desaster on Sziget Festival. So here are 2 hotels which are very close to the entrance to the Sziget Festival.

Hotel Ramada BudapestHotel Ramada Plaza
From the Hotel Ramada Plaza in Budapest to the festival it is approximately a 5 to 10 minutes walk but you can alternatively take the HÉV which takes seconds to get there. A room in the hotel is available from 35€ per night per person and offers all regular services such as breakfast and a clean room every night you come back home.

Hotel Retro BudapestHotel Retro Budapest

The Hotel Retro is available from 54€ per night per person including breakfast.

About the Sziget Festival

What I like about Sziget Festival is that it is not only about music but you can discover so many things in different booths. People, companies or whatever offer all kinds of activities for those who want to relax from the music and do something else which is especially interesting for those who are staying on the island. The island offers everything you need from restaurants, cash machines, supermarket and everything else you could need in this week. But many people take some time and go to the city or just off the island to relax, see Budapest, shop important things and what so ever.
